  1. I love PBS. And StoryBots…and pretty much anything I can had to my children that helps them learn independently. We talk about what they watch and I, too, have learned some things that way. When my 4-year-old was about 3 and a half, he explained to my mom how pollination works thanks to StoryBots. THAT helped me realize screen time is not all bad! Especially if we sit with them and talk about it.

The best thing about homeschooling is the flexibility, in my opinion. I try to remember that on the days I just can’t make my 4-year-old do anything remotely “schoolish”. He’s young enough structured learning is not a must, and if I force it he will just dislike it all the more. Next year when kindergarten matters, we may have to be a bit more structured, but for now we go with the flow and learn throughout the day in all kinds of ways.

    This is great encouragement, Jessie!

    1. Thank you! And I’m with you on screen time being beneficial if we monitor it well and participate with them. My kids (and myself!) have learned so much from PBS and I love it! Even in Kindergarten and 1st, our science lessons frequently boiled down to Wild Kratts or Sid the Science Kid. And they learned a ton because it was enjoyable. I’m glad you’re able to embrace the flexibility of homeschooling. I tried to be a lot more structured in our earlier years and I regret a lot of it. There were far more frustrated tears back then because of it. (Mostly from the kids, but some from me…). Well done, going with the flow of life! :)

  2. I’m with you on option three. It took me a long time to let go of everything getting done every single day. I’m a task oriented person, and homeschool has forced me to let go of the things that don’t really matter, and realize the truly important things my kids have gained over the years. I feel your pain on juggling the good stuff we say yes to. Something’s gotta give when we do those cool classes and co ops and sports and all of the extra stuff. That’s OK though. Our kids are with us and they gain so much more than we see at the moment. And I love PBS! My kids were raised on all of those shows. Way to go on the garage sale!

    1. Thanks, Meghan! Yes, homeschooling really has a way of shifting your perspective on what really matters, doesn’t it? And you’re absolutely right; our kids do gain so much more than we realize as we’re living life together. Thank goodness, haha!
